How to play ANIGUESS

One anime screenshot, hidden behind 24 tiles. Open as few as you can and name the show before the clock runs out.

Play a run

The board

Each round puts a single still frame from an anime episode behind a grid of 24 opaque tiles, six across and four down. Clicking a tile removes it and shows the part of the image underneath. There is a text box below the board: type the show's name into it whenever you think you know.

You get 60 seconds a round and 10 rounds a run. Runs of 5 and 20 rounds are available too, and the ?rounds= parameter in the URL sets it directly. Three runs a day, with the counter resetting at midnight in your own timezone.

Scoring

A round is worth up to 1000 points, and two things spend that budget:

Wrong guesses are unlimited, but each one takes 25 points off that round's ceiling — so guessing wildly is cheaper than opening tiles, up to a point. Recognising a show from three tiles in ten seconds is what a top score actually looks like.

Answering

The box takes free text and matches on aliases, so you rarely have to get the official title exactly right. jjk, kny, aot, snk and hxh all count, as do romaji and English titles for the same series. The anime page lists all 21 shows and takes requests for any that are missing.

Questions

How do you play ANIGUESS?
Click tiles to uncover parts of a hidden anime screenshot, then type the anime’s name before the 60-second timer runs out. A full run is 10 rounds.
Is ANIGUESS free to play?
Yes. ANIGUESS is free, needs no account, and runs in the browser with nothing to download or install.
How is the score calculated?
Each round is worth up to 1000 points. The fewer of the 24 tiles you reveal and the faster you answer, the more points you keep. Every wrong guess takes 25 points off what that round can still pay, and uncovering the whole board scores close to zero.
How many games can you play a day?
Three runs a day. The counter resets at midnight in your own timezone.
Can I play ANIGUESS on my phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser, no app required.
Which anime are in the game?
The line-up covers 21 series: Attack on Titan, Bleach, Blue Lock, Chainsaw Man, Death Note, Demon Slayer, Frieren, Gintama, Haikyu!!, Hunter x Hunter, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiju No. 8, Mashle, My Hero Academia, Naruto, One Piece, Sakamoto Days, Tokyo Ghoul, Tougen Anki and Witch Hat Atelier. Short forms are accepted, so "jjk", "kny", "aot" and "hxh" all count as correct answers.
How is ANIGUESS different from Wordle?
Wordle is a word puzzle with one shared daily answer. ANIGUESS is a visual recognition game: a run is 10 anime screenshots played against a per-round clock, scored on speed and on how little of the image you needed to recognise the show.
What is a good anime guessing game to play in the browser?
ANIGUESS is a free one: no sign-up, no install, and a run takes about five minutes. Each round hides an anime screenshot behind 24 tiles and scores you on how few you had to open. The line-up is 21 mainstream series, so it plays best if you have watched a season or two of the big shonen and sports titles.
Is there an anime version of Wordle?
ANIGUESS is the closest thing in spirit: a short daily habit, three runs a day, scored and shareable. It swaps letter-guessing for picture-guessing, so what it tests is how quickly you recognise a show from a fragment of one frame.
Can you play ANIGUESS with friends?
There is no live multiplayer. The way people play it together is by comparing scores: everyone plays their own run and posts the total, and the global leaderboard tracks the best of them.
